Salma Hayek or Salma Hayek Jiménez was born on September 2, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico. She is the daughter of Diana Jiménez Medina, an opera singer and talent scout. Her father, Sami Hayek Dominguez, who once ran for mayor of Coatzacoalcos, was either an oil company executive or the owner of an industrial-equipment firm. Her younger brother, Sami (born 1972), is a furniture designer.

She was sent to a boarding school in Louisiana at the age of 12, but was soon sent back home after getting in trouble for frequently terrorizing the nuns. She suffers from dyslexic and has combined type ADHD and, was also diagnosed recently with diabetes while she was pregnant in July 2007. She is a dog lover. Raised in a wealthy, devout Roman Catholic family, she went to the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana USA, at the age of twelve. She also attended university in Mexico City, where she studied International Relations at the Universidad Iberoamericana.

On March 9, 2007, Hayek confirmed her engagement to French billionaire and Kering CEO, François-Henri Pinault, as well as her pregnancy. She gave birth to daughter, Valentina Paloma Pinault, in 2007. On July 18, 2008, Hayek and Pinault announced the end of their engagement.They later reconciled and were again married on Valentine’s Day 2009 in Paris.On April 25, 2009, they were married a second time in Venice.

She began her career in Mexico starring in the telenovela Teresa and went on to star in the film El Callejón de los Milagros (Miracle Alley). Her breakthrough role was in the 2002 film Frida as Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. She also guest-starred in the ABC television comedy-drama Ugly Betty and, on the NBC comedy series 30 Rock from 2009 to 2013. At the age of 23, Hayek landed the title role in Teresa (1989).  Her first feature as a producer was 1999’s El Coronel No Tiene Quien Le Escriba.

In 2003, Hayek produced and directed The Maldonado Miracle, a show-time movie based on the book of the same name. In April 2007, Hayek finalized negotiations with MGM to become the CEO of her own Latin-themed film production company, Ventanarosa and, visited Guatemala in May 2005 as ambassador to Youth/AIDS, to promote the prevention of the mortal disease along with Ashley Judd and Colombian pop singer Juanes. She won Favorite Supporting Actress award in Action genre for Wild Wild West in 1999, Outstanding Actor/Actress award in 2002 for TV series: In the Time of the Butterflies and, Film-International award for her role in Bambi in 2012.
