Pia Mia Perez known professionally as Pia Mia was born on September 19, 1996 in Guam, United States. Mia cites that she grew up listening to Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey and classical music. She cites life in general as inspiration for her music as well as Dion, Houston and Carey as musical influences. She is a mixture of rhythmic pop, hip-hop and R&B.
Pia Mia started by posting videos of herself singing on video sharing site YouTube, later going on to star in commercials and music videos. Pia Mia was introduced to Chris Brown’s manager and record executive Abou Bu Thiam in 2013. She began working on material with producer Nic Nac and has since entered a relationship with him, including a cover of Drake’s 2013 single Hold On, We’re Going Home. Later that year, Kim Kardashian published a Keek video showing Pia Mia performing and a cappella version of her song for the rapper and Kanye West at the Kardashian family home, which generated interest on social media and, Pia Mia released the song with an accompanying music video on her YouTube channel in March 2014.
Pia Mia’s music video for Red Love, which was also her debut single from her first extended play The Gift, was uploaded to her Vevo channel on December 9, 2013 and, on December 23, 2013, Pia Mia released The Gift online for free. The eight-song production features Red Love as well as her cover of Hold On, We’re Going Home. In February 2014, a mini version of the mixtape was released on iTunes without two songs titled Shotgun Love or I Got It.
In February 2014, Pia Mia signed a multi-album deal with Records Fight for You, collaboration with Chance the Rapper written especially for the action film Divergent. As of May 2015, she has recorded over 100 songs for her debut album. On May 4, 2015, Mia released Do It Again as the lead single from her debut studio album. The song which featured vocals from Chris Brown and Tyga, became Mia’s first charting song as it reached No. 71 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart, No. 19 on the Rhythmic Songs chart and No. 70 on the Canadian Hot 100.
