Open Road has decided to move the release date of the highly anticipated movie, ‘Snowden’ from Christmas this year to sometime in 2016. The movie has been directed by one of Hollywood’s top directors, Oliver Stone and stars Joseph Gordon Levitt. This hit the eager fans hard as they were awaiting the movie restlessly and now as they have to wait some more to watch it, they are pretty much pissed off.
This lazy move from the studio has also killed the movie’s chances for the next year’s Oscar which is also a big blow to the technicians and the actors. The movie is about Edward Snowden, a former government contractor who was accused of leaking some highly confidential and classified government information. No spokesperson from the Open Road Films was there to comment on the issue. There were rumours afloat about the delay but keeping in mind the shot at the Oscar, it was said that the film will actually be in the race, thus bashing the rumours of the release date being postponed and as the air is cleared now, we can certainly say that Oscar 2016 is out of its hand now.
The new release date hasn’t been confirmed by the studio yet but it is said that the Joseph Gordon Levitt starrer will be presented in front of the audiences in the first quarter of 2016. The reason for the delay is said to be the post production work which hasn’t been finished yet. The director is said to be having some creative issues with the studio people regarding some cuts and thus, the tiresome delay.
However, this year’s time around Christmas is already quite crowded with the release of five other big films namely, ‘’Alvin and the Chipmunks’, the Will Smith starrer ‘Concussion’, Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg comedy titled ‘Daddy’s Home’, the Jennifer Lawrence starrer comedy-drama ‘Joy and Point Break’ and the biggie, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ opens the previous week. We must say that this year’s end is going to be a blast for the cinema lovers as they have choices in pretty much all the genres. In this scenario, we shouldn’t keep ourselves from saying that this intense competition would have eaten ‘Snowden’ alive and it can be quite a good thing from the business point of view as the release date has been shifted to the next year.
The Christmas this year will also see the release of Quentin Tarantino’s ‘The Hateful Eight’ and Leonardo starrer ‘The Revenant’, directed by the Oscar winner director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Now, these two are biggies in the true sense of words. Coming from two ‘best in the business’ filmmakers these two films can destroy the collections of all others mentioned above.
However, there is some good news for Joseph Gordon fan boys as he is already gearing up for the award season with his upcoming film, TriStar’s ‘The walk’. The buzz is in his favour big time but still, we must say that the chances of him getting the Oscar would have increased with ‘Snowden’.
