Kanye West, the US rapper and husband of reality TV star Kim Kardashian, has confirmed that he will run for the US presidency in 2020.
During a mostly nonsensical speech given at an MTV awards ceremony he stated his intention to run for the White House, although given the nature of the rest of his speech, this claim was written off by most as an attempt at humour.
But in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine in the US, the 38-year old rapper has confirmed that his intentions are far from a joke, and that he is deadly serious.
He is quoted by VF as saying: “I sit in clubs and I’m like: ‘Wow, I’ve got five years before I go and run for office and I’ve got a lot of research to do.’”
Backing
West believes that he has the backing of many people across the States, and he thinks that the average US voter would look at his candidacy and say: “We would really be into that, because actually if you think about it, he’s extremely thoughtful.”
The hip-hop star was recently revealed to be the seventh highest earner in the world of rap, according to Forbes magazine, and although he has a second child on the way, and will “always be a rock star”, he seems set on setting aside enough time to make run at the Oval Office in the next four years, although as of yet he has not decided which party he would likely represent.
