Defending Champions Chelsea Look Shaky This Season

Jose-Mourinho-Chelsea
Mourinho disappointed with Chelsea performance

An average pre-season, Mourinho’s first loss against Arsene Wenger at the Community Shield, humiliating losses in the Premier League (3-0 against Manchester City and 2-1 against Crystal Palace) and a complete struggle to find winning form. That is how Chelsea has performed so far in the season.

Quite shaky, quite average, definitely not the start that the defending champions would like. They haven’t had much change compared to their title-winning side from last season either, so one would wonder why the sudden drop in form.

However, there are no concrete reasons for their fall other than saying, they haven’t been good enough this season.

Chelsea acquired the services of Barcelona forward Pedro in an estimated 21 million pound transfer to add to their attack. He has done his part early with a goal and two assists but that is not good enough either.

Chelsea Defence is conceding too many goals

There have been no changes made among the regular starters in the Chelsea defence, but they have not been as sharp as last year. Nemanja Matic was their solid performer last campaign in the defensive midfielder role, stopping the attacks even before it developed. While, Fabregas created goals and Diego Costa executed to perfection.

None of these have happened this season, so far. That is where Chelsea is losing its points this season. Chelsea manager has already criticized the club physio, the referee for the losses and poor display of his team.

Will Chelsea strengthen squad on Deadline day?

Mourinho’s top target on the deadline day is certain to be Everton’s John Stones. The Everton man has displayed strong performances at the club and handed a transfer request, which was denied by Everton manager. However, that wouldn’t stop the Chelsea manager from re-attempting a bid to land the player to strengthen his defence.

The Chelsea manager might want to try some changes in their defensive line-up and give the 21 million pound left back Baba Rahman an opportunity, switching Azpilicueta to the right in place to replace out-of-form Branislav Ivanovic.
