Appstore Clocks Up $130 Billion In Downloads

The Apple AppStore is 10 years old and generated more than $130 billion for the company.

On average, Apple iPhone and iPad users access 40 different apps a month and spend three hours a day on them.

But what are the most downloaded apps, and do you use them?

Internet research consultancy AppAnnie has looked at the figures and found that more than 10,000 apps have raised more than £1 million from consumers.

AppStore statistics

Some of the statistics from the report are surprising – but many are what you would expect:

  • Games account for less than a third of downloads (31%) but 75% of consumer spending
  • The USA is the biggest market by downloads (40 billion) and consumer spend ($36 billion). China comes second in both – with 39.9 billion downloads generating a spend of $27.7 billion.
  • 5 million apps have been listed on the AppStore
  • 2,857 apps generated income of more than $1 million – and 564 took more than $10 million
  • AppStore generates twice as much money as Google Play even though iOS accounts for only 15% of global smartphones compared to Android.
  • Apple app downloads beat Google by 2 to 1 in 2017
  • 49% of app downloads and 59% of consumer spend comes from the Asia-Pacific
